mini workspace makeover: Part I

we have a small nook in our apartment that i adopted as my "area." we outfitted it with a sleek, small white desk, which i'm keeping somewhat bare so there's plenty of room for gluing, cutting, spreading out.  as always, i wanted to use little money and make it as pretty as possible.  today, a look at the window covering.  i'll total it up as we go, so you can see how great results can be on a budget.  (sidenote: since we rent, i can't paint, which would take this makeover to a whole new level)

here are some step by step photos first of the curtain i made.

first: i went outside and searched for a sturdy branch that would serve as the dowel:

these photos are after i peeled off the bark and sanded the life out of the branch.  (i used 100 grit, medium sandpaper)
price - dowel: free, sandpaper: $2.49

next up, i sprayed the branch a shiny gold.

gold leaf spray paint: $3.29

then, i used the fabric i had on hand (from mother's day placemats) and cut long strips using pinking shears to avoid fraying.  I added ribbon to mix it up. I then ironed the strips:

fabric strips: free (originally purchased on sale for $1 each) ribbon: $1 each at the dollar store

Last step: I layed out all my materials and got to hot gluing.

final product...i am very happy!

grand total: $7.78
