NEW NAMES AT FERRE

Tommaso Aquilano and Roberto Rimondi have been named as the new creative director duo at Gianfranco Ferré. They will debut for the Italian fashion house in September with spring/summer 2009 womenswear collection. The pair, who began working together in 1988, first hit headlines when they won first prize in the Italian Vogue/Alta Roma-sponsored Who's On Next contest for young talent.

Since spring/summer 2007, they have worked together as creative directors of Malo. Aquilano was born in San Seveero di Puglia and studied at the Rome Fashion and Costume Academy, while Bologna-born Rimondi attended the Carlo Secoli Institute in Milan."We are honoured and happy to carry forward the name of a great brand like Gianfranco Ferré," they said tonight. "[He] has always had mythical status for us. His natural aptitude for the grandiose gesture, his sense of the dramatic, architectonic severity, and his peerless knowledge of materials are now for us a great source of motivation. We would like to be worthy of him."

Gianfranco Ferré died at the age of 62 in June 2007. He was briefly succeeded at his namesake house by Lars Nilsson, who was announced as the new creative director in September last year before unexpectedly leaving the position - after designing just one well-received menswear collection - in February 2008.

My opinion on the subject...

I really liked Gianfranco Ferré´s spring/summer 2008 collection. The collection was very clean, lots of block colours, no fussy prints or flowers. Main colours used were black, white, grey, brown, beige and purple. It was also very feminine and flowy. Definitely easy to wear. It featured lots of high-waisted wide pants with pretty muslin blouses, flowing dresses in silk and chiffon. My favourite looks are the strapless knee-lenght gold dress and the long lilac dress that Carmen Kass is wearing.
